Before running for a spot on the board of directors, it is important to find out the time commitment that is required to be prepared for meetings, attend trainings, and conferences.
The Riverland Energy Board of Directors have monthly board meetings which are typically held on the last Monday of the month. Currently, meetings begin at 5:00 p.m. and typically end around 9:00 p.m., depending on the agenda. These meetings are held in person at the headquarters in Arcadia. On average, each director spends approximately 10 hours per month preparing for the monthly board meeting. Preparation includes reviewing the agenda and all supporting documents to be discussed at the meeting. Riverland provides Directors with an email address as well as a tablet, which contains a program to review all documents.
Additional meetings like board informational roundtables, committee meetings, strategic planning, and budget meetings are also required. These meetings also require preparation time on top of the normal monthly board meeting preparation. On average, directors will spend an additional 10-15 hours to prepare for these additional meetings.
Occasional travel for conferences and training sessions may be required, including both local and out-of-state/regional destinations. Examples of these meetings are Riverland Energy's Annual Meeting, District Committee Meeting, Wisconsin Electric Cooperative Association's (WECA) Annual Meeting, WECA's Education and Lobby Days in Madison and the National Rural Electric Cooperation Association's (NRECA) Annual Meeting called Power Xchange.
Serving as a Director at Riverland Energy Cooperative demands a time commitment, a dedication to learning the industry, and gives you the opportunity to represent your district and its members.
