Surge Protection
Riverland Energy offers its members several devices to help guard against unwanted surges occurring in the home.
Power surges, which can be caused by lightning strikes, trees touching power lines, animals and birds, even turning on your vacuum cleaner, are common. Power surges from lightning alone cause an estimated $500 million in damage to electronics each year.
Most surges can be avoided with proper surge protection. Riverland Energy Cooperative offers the smart solution to protect your valuable equipment: Secure Home power surge protection.
Point of entry - Choose from two units to protect your home's wiring and major appliances from power surges outside the home: A meter-based unit can be installed by an energy professional from Riverland Energy. Or you can purchase a main panel device that can be installed by a qualified electrician. Please call our office for the price of a main panel device.
Both the meter-based and main panel device includes excellent manufacturer's warranties.
Point of use - These second-stage surge suppression devices provide protection from "back door" surges and surges that originate within the home. Point of use surge suppressors can be found at most stores that sell electronics.
UPS (Uninterpretable Power Supply)- Protect your computer from surges and protect your data from power outages. A UPS unit not only has built-in electric and phone surge protection, it also has a built-in battery backup that will instantaneously take over the power needs of your computer in the event of an outage. The UPS unit can run your computer for up to 10 - 15 minutes and give you time to finish what you were working on, save it, and back out of your programs in an orderly fashion. When power is restored at your outlet, the UPS unit will automatically switch your computer back to regular power and start recharging its battery. UPS units can also be found at most stores that sell electronics.
